Name: Catherine Demet

Occupation:  Dressmaking Tutor

In three words describe your work: Creative. Skillful. Rewarding.

How did your business start?
I was looking for a new job following redundancy and whilst having my hair cut one day, my hairdresser said ‘why don’t you go back to doing the thing you love and start teaching people how to sew again?  The seed was ‘sewn” and following a chat with the ladies from WiRE (Women in Rural Enterprise) at the Newport Show, I took the first steps to setting up my business ‘Love Dressmaking’ I decided to run classes and workshops and offer one-to-one tuition in Dressmaking, starting with running the classes from my sewing room at home.

Have you got a favourite piece? Why?
The bridesmaids dress I made for my little Granddaughter.  It was for her to wear to her Mummy and Daddy’s wedding so it was very special.  I actually made the dresses for the 3 little bridesmaids.  They were made from a heavy ivory coloured satin and the bodices were made with an overlay of embroidered organza.  My Daughter and I applied tiny crystals to the centre of each embroidered flower so they were very pretty and unique.  As my Granddaughter was only 3 years old, there was a chance that she might not want to wear her dress on the day, so inside the petticoats I tacked in a small patch with a transfer print of the ‘Frozen’ characters, so that we could entice her into wearing the dress.  As it was, we didn’t need to use the ‘bribe’ and I waited until the reception to show her and the other bridesmaids what was hidden in their dresses.  They were so excited when I showed them and then ran around lifting their dresses to show everyone what they found on their petticoats.  Lovely memories.

With all that has been achieved in your career so far, what are you most proud of?
I am proud to have set up ‘Love Dressmaking’ and to still be sharing my love of dressmaking with my enthusiastic learners 7 years later.

What do you love most about running your creative business?
I get great pleasure from passing on my skills to my learners.  I enjoy being in the sewing room wherever it may be and the lovely thing about teaching adults is that they will tell me when they are enjoying a class, or when they are pleased or amazed that they have learnt something new.  Even better – when ladies come to class wearing something they have made with me, that just makes me love my job even more.

What will people find when they come to see you at the Shrewsbury Winter Festival? There will be lots of information about the classes I have planned in Shrewsbury, Newport and Codsall in the New YearThere will be gift vouchers for my tuition available to buy and some hand made sewing kits containing useful dressmakers equipment. They will find sample garments on display, together with examples of patterns, tools and equipment.  I will be sewing throughout the day and will be happy to discuss the bestoptions I can offer for learning with a few hints or tips thrown in when needed.

What are you looking forward to most about the Shrewsbury Winter Festival?  Sharing information about my classes with lots of people and enjoying soaking up the festive atmosphere.  Also it will be great to be a part of the Buy-From team.

What are your plans for Christmas?  I’m looking forward to lots of lovely family time.
