Small Business Saturday | Celebrating SMN Film

How long have you been running your film business?

Around 6 years.

How did SMN Film start?

Before we were SMN FIlm, We were Shropshire Media Network, (hence the abbreviation) and we offered a wider range of other creative services including graphic design, web design and educational packages. But we found the most job satisfaction in creativity was always in the film production projects, so we streamlined our services to be just film and content production.

Describe your business for us?

SMN FIlm is a Film production company specialising in cinematic lifestyle content.

What are the challenges in running a small creative business?

For us, it is being seen. As a creative production company located in a rural corner of England, we compete with the likes of larger companies in London or other big cities, but we offer the same level of quality. So being seen by the kind of brands we want to work with is key.

With all that you have achieved so far in your business, what are you most proud of?

I am most proud of the life we have built for ourselves and our family in Shropshire. We are constantly inspired by the beauty of our surroundings, and being able to spend the time we choose with our boys. This has had the biggest impact on the kind of films we create, and ultimately the kind of business that we have built around our lives.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about starting up their own creative business?

If you can find a way to make a business out of doing something you love, then you will never work a day in your life.

Show the world your passion, always push your own creativity, and never give up.

What are your plans for your SMN Film in the future?

For the next year we will be growing on a massive scale. We are looking to expand our core team with some incredibly talented people, and collaborating on some huge projects.

Do you have a favourite project you have worked on?

For us, working with drones has always been both exciting and incredibly rewarding.

We experimented and pushed the capabilities of our Inspire 2 drone to its limits during the Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre project. Especially the single shot that flew backwards over the Ludlow Teme Weir, under Dinham bridge and up over the Ludlow Castle.

What do you enjoy most about running your own business?

Having the freedom to choose who you work with, and when you work.

Even more than that, working with my Wife Miche, who always strives for me and our business to be the best we can possibly be.

Show off…. Give us your top 3 favourite SMN Films so we can sit back and enjoy…
