Spotlight on: Tickle Tots

Ahead of the International Spring Fair, which comes to the NEC, Birmingham, next month, we are shining a spotlight on the nine independent businesses which will be represented by Buy-From Britain at the event.Among the nine businesses is Tickle Tots, a business run by Sophia Ferguson which sells eco-friendly cloth nappies and accessories.

The Spring Fair will be the business’s first time exhibiting at a trade show. Sophia tells us, “We are excited to meet new potential buyers and retailers interested to find out more about Tickle Tots.

Launched by Sophia in 2015, the business has grown rapidly over recent years, particularly after Tickle Tots products were featured on Dragons Den.

“When my daughter was born I became more conscious of our environmental impact on our planet and also about what I was putting against her skin,” Sophia tells us. “8 million disposable nappies are sent to landfill each day in the UK alone and take over 400 years to degrade, releasing harmful greenhouse gasses in the process; the absorbent gels can also contain harmful chemicals.

“I knew I wanted to use cloth nappies. However, I struggled to find a design that had all the features I required, so I started by sewing my own from my kitchen table in Shropshire, then sewing them for friends and the business grew from here.”

In addition to creating eco-friendly products, Tickle Tots also plant a UK-native tree for every 1000 nappies made. It is an exciting time for the business; Waitrose began selling Tickle Tots products in 88 stores nationwide in September 2018, and this month sees an extension to 122 of their stores. In 2019, new product lines will be added, and they have plans to launch into stores in South Africa later in the year.

“Our aim is to bring our range of eco-friendly cloth nappies and accessories to the forefront of parents’ and carers’ minds when considering their options, and help to make the world a little greener, one cloth bottom at a time.”

Tickle Tots will be exhibiting at the International Spring Fair with Buy-From Britain from 3-7 February.
